Yeah, yeah

I got a beautiful woman
Gonna be starting something
That gets us straight up outta here

I can fix it
Let me take us away
(Woo-hoo)
Yeah, we leave at night
(Woo-hoo, Woo-hoo)
Let me take us
Let me take us away
(Woo-hoo, Woo-hoo)
Away

We drove out to California
Straight through the desert of Arizona
Sweet Texas, I’ll kiss ya
Hope to be back
But now I gotta leave ya
(Woo-hoo, Woo-hoo)

I can fix it
Let me take us away
Yeah, we leave at night
We stay by day

Let me take us
Let me take us away
(Woo-hoo, Woo-hoo)

I wouldn’t know just how sweet this tastes now
No, if at first I did not go through
the bitter times, the bitter places
I’ll stay alert for new battles
But, for now, we’re here

Say you’re with me
There’s gold ahead
There’s golden dreams
And life’s hills and valleys

I’ve been kicking around the idea to document the struggles that we went through to open our private practice for a few months now. Even though my name is on the building, I can’t really say that it’s just mine…there are several other people that have poured the hearts and souls into the place. We went through hell and back to put this office together and its been a crazy ride.

I’ve also be looking into writing a how-to guide to explain how we made our office so successful in such a short amount of time. As many of you already know, our primary advertising was a simple facebook profile. I really get the feeling that some of our facebook trade secrets would be very interesting to certain folks.

So I decided that I would write both…but in one book. The book will be called “Facebook Zen” and its going to document my crash course education in internet marketing and how we applied all of it to build “Adkins Chiropractic and Wellness” into the business that it is today.

So here’s the crazy part… We’re releasing all of the facebook secrets that built our small business…

Kind of a scary thought for me. I wanted to do something to make sure that the information didn’t get out too far. We came up with the idea to only release 1000 copies of the ebook when we release it. I feel like that kind of limits us as publishers, but at the same time….I think that’s what makes this project special for those that are a part of it.

I got my marketing education from guys like John Chow, Jeremy Shoemaker, and Frank Kern. I feel like the things I learn from internet marketers like them was priceless. I wanted to be able to give back to the online marketing community as well as teach small business people, like myself, how to do the same things I did (market on facebook for next to free) and build an insanely successful “brick and mortar” business.

We’ll be releasing “Facebook Zen” around May 2010 and will be giving away free tips and tricks to our email subscribers in the meantime (you can sign-up for the free info here).

It’s my story of failure and success…bottom to top…. no holds barred…mixed in with a weath of facebook marketing trickery.

I’m extremely excited about this book and I hope you enjoy it when we’re done.

I’ll keep you posted!

I was watching a video presentation (in the Secret Classroom Series from Joel Comm) by Brad Fallon and he said something that encapsulated something I’ve been trying to do for the last 3 months.

Brad was giving a presentation on how he turned a wedding favor business (which he started in his basement) into a multimillion dollar producing company, and said the following:

“The Less You Do in Your Business, The More You’ll Make”

This is a concept that most small businesses never understand, and hence they never grow into large small businesses.

What Brad meant is this:

If you, the owner, make it a point to do everything in your business (be marketing, be the manager, be the salesman, etc.) then growing eventually becomes impossible because you can’t handle all of the jobs. The busier you get, the more work flows your way….and slowly you have to start “catching up” all the time.

What is the most important thing that you do in your business?

The answer is “Think”…..

If you get so bogged down with all the other jobs that you can’t be innovative anymore….your business effectively has a ceiling that you can’t get past. When you reach a point where you have a million jobs to complete yourself…you start going on “auto-pilot” to complete them…and effectively stop “thinking”.

So what is the solution?

Do Less……

As your business grows you have to understand that you have to pass off workload. The more workload you can pass off the more time you can actually lead your company. The person that you pass the work to may not do it exactly how you do it, but the most important thing is that it gets done effectively and that you have time to “think” and innovate. Don’t be overly concerned with “the process” when passing work to employees…be concerned with the “end result”.

That isn’t to say that the process isn’t important…… but you have to separate times when “process” is important from when “process is for the sake of process” (which is usually when someone likes flexing their “boss” muscles too much….that’s not you is it?).

The point is. Your business is supposed to work for you. You have to design it to work for you.

If you don’t…then you effectively work for the business…and that’s not even close to why you went into business for yourself.

Start working on doing less in your business (by training employees to make your life easier) and before long you’ll see the growth that you’re looking for.

One of the most rewarding things that we can do in our lives is inspire people.

Whether you’re a teacher, business owner, doctor, or construction worker (or anything else), one of the most valuable skills you can possess is the ability to communicate an idea effectively.

Whether you like it or not… we’re all in Sales. I don’t care what career path you actually took, your day to day life always includes “selling something”. The difference between everyone is “what they’re selling”. No matter what that is, being able to get a point from your brain to another person’s brain, in an effective way, is the key to being successful.

Steve Jobs, the man in charge at Apple, is a master at communicating a point. Steve doesn’t just tell you what a new product does…he tells you how its going to change your life…and not only that…he makes you believe it.

Check out the movie below. The vid is an in depth guide to making your presentations (no matter how big or small) as effective as Steve’s.

Enjoy!

Mark my words.

“In 2010…Location, and what you do with it, are key”

I know what you’re saying…. “What the hell are you talking about Dr. Ben?”

There is a huge movement among the web’s content developers to start attaching their content to the location that relates to that data. So what does this mean exactly? It means that the days of writing a blog post and trying to figure out where the author are from are over. It means that you’ll no longer have to wonder where a video or photo was taken (if the author of the media forgets to tell you…it won’t matter anymore). The Geolocation of everything that gets posted to the web is about to be data that is an automatic rather than the exception.

There is alot of proof-of-concept out there right now. Whether it be FourSquare, with their giant location based game; Yelp with their amazing Review/Augmented Reality App, or Gowalla with their cut and dry location tagging, Location apps are on the rise.

So why is so much attention being put on location based apps?

First an example from a site we’re working on: (GeoBluffee) We use geodata to plot all of our picture data onto a map. When +Bluffee users go to this site, it helps them visualize the scope of what we’re doing with +Bluffee. It makes our users feel even more connected to what we’re doing. They can see the photo’s from the party the night before plotted on a map that shows how far away we were from their house (silly but powerful).

The pure and simple fact is that this is being driven by the rise of some of the newer cellphone technologies. The majority of Internet usage is about to move from a Laptop/Desktop world to a All-in-One Cellphone World. Internet users are about to become a whole lot more mobile (and companies like Google love that) With the rise of the Iphone and Droid…this almost seems inevitable. Location data is finally getting its time in the spotlight.

EXAMPLE: You type in Coffeeshops in your mobile browser and it automatically locates any Coffeeshop within a 2 mile radius.

That’s pretty cool! But your also going to be able to see every tweet, every review, and every pic/video from and about that location. (Good and Bad)

In the next few years, everything you do will have a location tied to it…..whether it be a twitter tweet, a facebook update, or a photo that you just took. That’s all well and good for new data, but what do we do in terms of organizing data that doesn’t have location data tied to it. An interesting startup that solves this problem (as well as some very interesting other geolocation issues) is a startup called Groundmap.

I could spend a good amount of time trying to explain what Groundmap does…but you really need to sign up for their beta and see for yourself. Groundmap really has me thinking about the possibilites. My Idea for Groundmap….Index Everything and tie it to a location and then give users the ability to embed that data all over the web. (Lets say that I wanted to embed my office’s Groundmap feed into a facebook update…. Now that’s sharing!)

So why in the heck should your business care about GeoTagging?

Look at it this way… If people can find you….and everything that your other customers have said…in one place (a page that list all the internet chatter about you), then they can make a really good decision whether or not they want to do business with you before they ever set foot through your door or call you on the phone.

Geolocation is the next step for social networking…Its “word of mouth” taken to the next level.

Like it or not. Your business will become more findable and therefore more transparent in the next few years. Those that learn how this works and embrace the technology will be able to take advantage of the publicity (and get in front of any negativity that comes their way). Those that take it as an afterthought better hope they don’t have much competition in their field.

Location is about to be King Again… Are you ready?

(So the next post we do on this….will be how to do Geo right!……Stay tuned)

I’m taking a page out of my latest “Books That Rock” pick, “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferris.

One of the exercises in the book (which deals with getting over the word “impossible”) is to contact a very high profile celebrity and ask them a question.

The point of this is to start to get rid of the idea that you can’t do things. How many times a day is a project completely destroyed by these thoughts: “I can’t”, “That’s Impossible”, or “That’s a Waste of Time”?

Most of us feel like certain things are out of our reach because we weren’t born into a certain family or because we’re not good looking, or because we don’t have the monetary backing that others have. The point that Tim’s Book makes…and that I’m trying to make ….. is that you need to stop saying that things are too hard… and start using the fact that others think certain things are too hard to your advantage.

The mere thought of “impossible” is enough to narrow your competition.

:THE PROJECT:

So my so-called “impossible project” is to contact at least one of five A-List Celebrities.

The cool part….You get to help me pick who we’re going to try and contact.

Post your suggestions in the Comments Sections below, Facebook me at facebook.com/drbenadkins, or twitter me at @benadkins.

I’ll post my progress as we go.
This is going to be fun!
